Switzerland goes to historic referendum on population reduction on Sunday! 52%

Switzerland faces a crucial national vote on Sunday that could determine the future of its immigration and demographic growth policies. Voters will decide whether the country's population should be limited to 10 million by 2050.

The initiative has been proposed by the Swiss People's Party (SVP), which calls it a "sustainability initiative", arguing that rapid population growth is putting pressure on housing, public transport, the healthcare system and the environment.

The Swiss government, other political parties, business organizations and unions oppose the proposal, calling it a measure that could damage the economy and relations with the European Union. They say restricting immigration would worsen labor shortages in key sectors such as healthcare, tourism and elderly care.

Switzerland's population has grown from 7.3 million in 2002 to around 9.1 million today. Around 27 percent of the population was born abroad, and a significant portion of the labor market relies on foreign workers.

According to the proposal, the government would have to take measures once the population reaches 9.5 million. These measures could include limiting the number of asylum seekers and new restrictions on family reunification. If the population reaches 10 million, Switzerland could be forced to review or terminate international agreements, including those related to the free movement of European Union citizens.

Recent polls show a close race. About 52 percent of voters oppose the initiative, while 45 percent support it. A significant number of voters remain undecided, making the outcome difficult to predict.

The vote is considered an important test of how Switzerland intends to deal with the challenges of immigration, an aging population and the needs of the economy in the coming years.
