"Justice for Veliaj"/ EU Ambassador and European officials react to protests in Albania: Unacceptable violence!

The fourth meeting of the CoR-Albania Joint Consultative Committee, held in Elbasan, was also accompanied by discussions on the latest political developments in the country. The European Union Ambassador to Albania, Sofia Moreira de Sousa, condemned the violence displayed during the protests, but at the same time emphasized the responsibility of institutions to listen to citizens and respond to their grievances.
During the meeting, which focused on the role of local government in the European integration process, the ambassador emphasized that violence is unacceptable, while institutions must have the necessary capacities to listen to citizens' concerns and find solutions.
The mayor of Elbasan, Gledian Llatja, also described the situation created during the protests in Albania as worrying, underlining the importance of dialogue and peaceful protests. According to him, in a democracy, citizens have not only rights, but also obligations. The co-chair of the CoR-Albania Joint Consultative Committee, Antonio Mazzeo, also addressed this issue, and also described the violence as unacceptable. But beyond the protests, the European official also raised other sensitive issues, such as territorial reform and the issue of the mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj.
Mazzeo stressed that territorial reform should be based on the functions and responsibilities of local government and not on electoral interests. As for Veliaj, he pointed out the importance of guaranteeing a fair process and respecting the independence of the judiciary.
The European official also referred to the report of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, which raises concern about the practice of prolonged detention of mayors.
The CoR-Albania Consultative Committee meeting was held for the first time in Elbasan and took on a special significance also due to the city’s commitment to European climate policies. Elbasan is the first city in Albania to officially join the consortium implementing the European Union’s Mission “100+12 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030”.
The focus of the conference was also the role of municipalities in Albania's rapprochement with the European Union. Participants emphasized that integration is not built only at the central level, but also in cities, through strong, transparent and professional local institutions, capable of providing quality services and bringing the European process closer to citizens.
