Bank of Albania breaks record in foreign exchange purchases, over 1 billion euros during 2025

The Bank of Albania has once again broken the record for purchasing foreign currency during 2025, purchasing 1 billion and 27 million euros, with the aim of increasing foreign exchange reserves and curbing the strengthening of the lek exchange rate.

According to data published by the Bank of Albania on interventions in the domestic foreign exchange market, this figure marks an increase of 10% compared to the previous year.

Of this amount, 297.9 million euros constitute planned purchases to increase the foreign exchange reserve, while 729.1 million euros are direct purchases on the market to prevent further decline in the euro-lek exchange rate, up 12.1%.

The month with the highest value of purchases was July, when the BoA purchased 236 million euros.

For 2026, the Bank of Albania anticipates 26 foreign exchange purchase auctions, with a total value of 330-450 million euros, with a main focus on the summer season, to maintain exchange rate stability and increase foreign exchange reserves.
