Banks, "handcuffed"! BoA: Demand for loans is expected to increase in

Despite the increase in demand for loans from businesses and individuals, banks have been reserved in approving them in the first quarter of this year. Meanwhile, the Bank of Albania, while predicting an increase in demand for loans, says that during the second quarter of 2025, lending criteria will be eased.

Despite high demands from both businesses and individuals, banks have been stingy in granting loans in the first quarter of this year.

According to official data from the Bank of Albania, this trend is influenced by factors such as credit history, insufficient income, and poor financial statements of applicants.

Faced with this situation, a change in this approach is expected in the second quarter. The Bank of Albania foresees easing of standards for investment loans and short-term liquidity, but only for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Large businesses will not benefit from this relief, as the standards for them are expected to remain unchanged.

However, demand for credit from businesses is expected to continue to expand in the second quarter, driven by improving business confidence and current interest rates.

On the other hand, individuals have also been active in seeking financing, both for home purchases and for consumer spending, and here too, banks have maintained a more cautious approach.

The expectations are that in the coming months, standards for mortgage loans will be eased, while consumer loans will face a further tightening of criteria.
