Eurostat: Villages in Albania most affected by poverty in Europe

Life in the countryside continues to be much more difficult than in the city, not only in Albania, but throughout Europe.
The latest Eurostat data shows that residents of rural areas are more likely to live in poverty or face social exclusion, as they have fewer employment opportunities, lower incomes and more limited access to services.
In the European Union, around one in four rural residents, or 24.7%, was at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2024. In cities this percentage is lower, 20.4%, indicating that life in urban areas offers more economic and social opportunities.
Albania is in an even more difficult situation. According to Eurostat, 54% of the country's rural residents are at risk of poverty or social exclusion, the highest rate in Europe. This means that more than half of people living in rural areas face economic difficulties, lack of sufficient income or difficult living conditions.
Albania is followed by Romania and Bulgaria, while countries such as the Czech Republic, Slovenia and the Netherlands have the lowest levels of poverty in rural areas.
Across the European Union, around 93.3 million people, or 21% of the population, were at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2024. The data shows that, despite economic development, urban-rural inequalities continue to remain one of the biggest social challenges in Europe, with Albania remaining the country most affected by this indicator. /Euronews
