Rail transport in the country is heading to the point of "death" as freight and passenger transport fell further in 2021, INSTAT reported.

The length of the railway network in use in the country was 224 km in 2021. In use are the railway lines, Durrës - Librazhd 100 km, Gjorm - Kufi 93 km, Durrës - Kashar 31 km.

Rail transport of goods is carried out at distances of 0-49 km and 50-150 km. The volume of goods transported by distance 50-150 km is 66.5 thousand tons, or 88.3% of the goods transported by rail transport.

Rail transport of goods Rail transport of goods resulted in 25.11 million ton-km in 2021, which compared to 2020 is presented with a decrease of 3.5%.

Until 2015, the railway transport of goods was carried out only by Hekurudha Shqiptare sh.a. Meanwhile, in 2016, private entities also began to operate in the railway transport of goods.

In 2021, transport carried out by private entities accounts for the largest share of rail freight transport in the country with 88% in tons and 77% in ton-km. Transported goods are classified according to the European Standard Classification (NST 2007), implemented in Albania since 2019. According to the NST 2007 classification, 88.1% of goods transported by rail are coal and lignite, crude oil and natural gas, as well as 10 .2% are metal and mining products and other quarry products.

Regarding trade exchanges by rail (import+export) in 2021, 33.4 thousand tons of goods were exchanged abroad, of which 11.3 thousand tons were exchanged with Montenegro.

In 2021, 24,018 passengers used rail transport as a means of travel, where compared to the previous year, the number of passengers who traveled with this type of transport increased by 33.8%. The graph below shows the number of passengers per km, for the period 2019-2021./Monitor
