Integration/ 253 operators on the screen, EU "tests" the Albanian dairy industry

Albania cannot export animal products and dairy products to the European Union. Although we have been part of the Free Trade Agreement for more than three decades, our country does not meet the conditions to sell meat and dairy by-products to the 27 countries of the Union. With all chapters of negotiations with the European Union now open, businesses in these sectors are being scanned by institutions.

"The dairy sector has economic and social potential, but requires further consolidation in a short period of time. The Ministry's priority is to consolidate the sector, increase standards and categorize entities, a process that is currently being carried out by the NFA. Categorizing will help each operator have an action plan and standards," stated Tana Kika, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The Director of the National Food Authority, Blerina Gjylameti, announced at the first National Conference of the Dairy Processing Industry that after a scan of the sectors, inspections by the NFA troops have begun in plants and factories.

"Once we reach a conclusion, we will know what to do and perhaps draft a policy to support the sector. At the end of the year, the final report for 253 business operators will be released ," said Blerina Gjylameti, Director of the National Food Authority.

The main reason for this limitation is the lack of traceability in animal products, while the livestock registration process has not yet been completed.

"You will be affected in many areas, from security, employment, patents, employees, etc. The government should start a national plan that tells all businesses what they will face. We are an economy with 140 thousand NIPTs and it will not be difficult to overcome these challenges. You as businesses should also start preparing for this transformation," emphasized Arben Shkodra, Union of Albanian Manufacturers.

The analysis showed that milk processors will face 18 chapters with many obligations that will be controlled by the inspectorate.
