Albania becomes less peaceful/ Index: We are deteriorating in score and ranking

The “Global Peace Index” for 2025 shows that Albania has become less peaceful, compared to last year's edition, and has also dropped in score. This index positions Albania for this year in 52nd place among 163 countries taken in total. On the global map, our country is defined in light blue, which means that it is located next to countries that have worked with peace and have a high level of it. Albania has accumulated a total of 1,812 points from the 1,809 points it had during the previous edition. According to the report, the closer the score is to number 1, the more peaceful the country is.

Compared to the countries of the region, Albania ranks third, leaving behind Montenegro and North Macedonia. Montenegro ranks first in the region, ranking 34th. North Macedonia ranks 51st. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Serbia rank last in the region, respectively in 59th, 63rd and 64th places. Referring to the data of the report, Kosovo has shown a deterioration of three positions.

In relation to European countries, Albania ranks 28th out of 36 countries in total. Among European countries, in addition to countries in the region, Albania has left behind countries such as Cyprus and France. Iceland ranks first in Europe with 1,095 points. Iceland not only leads Europe in this index, but also the world.

This publication is the 19th edition of the “Global Peace Index” (GPI), and is produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP). This index measures the level of peace in these countries according to three main pillars which are: the level of social security, the extent of ongoing internal and international conflicts and the degree of militarization. These pillars are divided according to 23 indicators which relate to the murder rate, the impact of terrorism, the rate of imprisonment, crimes, perceptions of criminality, imports and exports of weapons, military spending, political instability, deaths from internal and external conflicts, violent demonstrations, relations with neighboring countries and others.

Regarding the first pillar, namely the extent of ongoing internal and international conflicts, Albania is rated with 1,403 points. For the level of social security, we are rated worse with 2,038 points, while for the degree of militarization we are rated with 2,021 points, where we also have the greatest deterioration. /SCAN
