Cryptocurrency giant Binance hit by cyberattack, $6.3 billion in digital assets affected

Cryptocurrency giant Binance has announced that around $6.3 billion in digital assets have been affected by a cyberattack, which could be considered one of the largest hacks in the history of the cryptocurrency industry.
The world's largest cryptocurrency exchange said that about half of the affected assets have been frozen, while the rest remain under the control of the hackers. Binance has said it will cover all losses caused by the incident.
According to the company's preliminary verifications, the attack may have started from the compromise of an engineer's laptop, through which an unauthorized person managed to carry out illegal withdrawals of funds.
Two companies specializing in analyzing cryptocurrency transactions have raised suspicions that the North Korean hacking group known as "TraderTraitor" is behind the attack.
TRM Labs, a company specializing in artificial intelligence-powered investigations, has identified similarities between the attack on Binance and previous incidents attributed to North Korea-linked groups, including the hacking of the Bybit platform.
Ari Redbord, global head of policy at TRM Labs, called the attack a watershed moment for the industry, noting that its scale is unprecedented.
According to him, a significant amount of the stolen assets remain in the hands of the attackers, which will make it difficult to trace and fully recover the funds.
Another analytics company, Chainalysis, also stated that it has a high level of confidence that the North Korean group is linked to this attack.
