What is the Night of Qadr - the most important night of Ramadan

The night of Qadr is considered by Muslims as the holiest night of Ramadan.

The exact date of the Night of Qadr is unspecified, but it is believed to occur on one of the last 10 days during this holy month.

Many Muslims believe it is either the night of the 27th day of Ramadan, or one of the odd-numbered nights in the last 10 days.

Since no one knows exactly which night marks the Night of Qadr, most Muslims observe all the last 10 nights of Ramadan by offering extra prayers and reading the Quran, Islam's holy book, reports Klan Kosova.

The night commemorates when the Qur'an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. According to Islamic tradition, the prophet went for one month every year to the cave of Hira, which was located on a mountain outside the city of Mecca.

It is believed that the Angel Gabriel (Gabriel) visited the prophet in the cave one night and inspired him to recite the first verses of the Qur'an to be revealed to him.

Every year, this night sees hundreds of thousands of Muslims head to mosques to attend congregational prayers.

In Palestine, tens of thousands of Muslims visit the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam's third holiest site, to pray during the Night of Qadr.

For several years, the Israeli military has allowed Palestinian women over 30 and men over 50 to enter Jerusalem from the occupied West Bank to pray.

In the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina, hundreds of thousands of people from around the world attend congregational prayers at the Great Mosque of Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina – the two holiest sites for Muslims.
