What could a persistent cough mean and what is its usual duration?

A persistent cough is a cough that lasts longer than usual, for more than three weeks. It can be dry or productive, meaning accompanied by phlegm.
It is often a symptom of an underlying condition, such as a respiratory infection, asthma, GERD, allergies, or even some more serious conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
The duration of a persistent cough depends on its cause. A cough, for example, associated with a viral infection like the common cold may persist for several weeks after other symptoms have subsided.
A persistent cough can be linked to both the flu and coronavirus, as both of these viral infections affect the respiratory system.
In the flu, a cough often occurs along with fever, muscle aches, chills, and fatigue. In the case of coronavirus, the cough is usually dry and may be accompanied by symptoms such as fever, shortness of breath, fatigue, loss of taste or smell, and sore throat.
In both cases, the cough may persist even after recovery, due to the inflammation caused in the airways.
What can we do about a persistent cough?
If the cough is due to an infection, specific treatment may not be required and the cough will gradually subside. However, if it lasts more than 8 weeks or is accompanied by alarming symptoms, such as weight loss, hemoptysis, or severe difficulty breathing, it is important to consult a doctor for further examination.
