This is a photo of "The Black Arnaut", an Afro-Albanian woman posing in traditional Balkan dress, in 1868.
Black Albanians were part of the Albanian-speaking community of Ulcinj, Montenegro, descendants of Ottoman slaves. Over time, they integrated into the local society, speaking Albanian and practicing their traditions.
The photograph was taken in 1868 in Bucharest, Romania, by Hungarian photographer Carol Szathmari.
