At least this is what is said in the catalog of the National Museum in Belgrade, where under the reproduction of this painting by Jovanovic, then titled "Albanian Warrior" number 16, in the origin section it is written that the painting was in London and New York. The catalog also states that this work was most likely created when the painter was staying near Shkodra.
One of Jovanović's successful versions of a typical Albanian warrior of the 19th century, who in moments of rest relaxes with tea, coffee or the intoxicating smell of hookah before the next campaigns. Stunning physiognomy, sharp facial features, with rich costumes and full combat equipment, and a typical Albanian rifle, warrior, perhaps the commander of a small battalion, could have been painted in the mid-eighties of the XIX century. Jovanović lived in the area of Shkodra in the north of Albania", writes the art historian and adviser of the National Museum of Belgrade Petar Petrović in the publication titled "Paja Jovanović: Systemic catalog of works", quoted by Danas. Here it is said that the photo also appears with the names "An Arnaut warrior", "Resting sentinel from Shkodra", "Albanian chief".
We remind you that yesterday, with the support of the state, the Museum of the City of Belgrade participated in the auction in Sodebi and bought the painting "Bashibozuku's Vacation". The director of the Belgrade City Museum, Jelena Medakovic, told "Večernje Novosti" that it is a "technically impeccable oil on board, with extremely precisely executed details, which stands out for its beauty, which can contribute a lot in its collection value".
The position of the National Museum of Belgrade regarding the auction of Paja Jovanović's painting at Sodeby is that it "unequivocally reflects the interest in the works of Orientalists among world collectors".
"The painting of our esteemed painter Paja Jovanović was known in the literature even before the auction, as evidenced by the fact that with the title "Albanian Warrior", it was published in 2012 in the publication Paja Jovanović: Systematic catalog of works.
The painting, which belongs to the early period of Paja Jovanović's work, was created in the mid-eighties of the 19th century, commissioned by the London gallerist Henry Wallis. It is a depiction of a 19th century warrior painted in the spirit of academic realism."
They also add that it is only natural that when a work of our esteemed artist is offered by auction houses it arouses interest. "Every time a work by one of our respected artists is offered by auction houses, it arouses a great deal of interest, and quite expectedly, from local professionals and the general public," it added.
