Rare disc with the voice of Father Gjergj Fishta is restored

The Director of the Armed Forces Museum, Niko Kotherja, both a historian and collector, has restored a disc that records the voice of Father Gjergj Fishta.

The disc is one of the few authentic copies that have survived to this day. Niko Kotherja told ATSH that the disc was in an unusable condition, broken into three pieces.

The historian explains that in its original state, it was impossible to hear and that a great deal of work was required to fuse the three parts into one to enable the accurate reading of the tablet. In this way, Fishta the Great was resurrected through his voice.

Asked about technical details about the restoration, Kotherja said that the restoration was carried out in Korça, using efficient methods for gluing and at the same time creating the most favorable terrain for reproduction on the gramophone. The disc still needs a final intervention, to eliminate noise, and then the moment will come for the digitalization of the content of both sides.

"What you see is one of the only authentic copies of the disc that has survived to this day, where the original voice of the colossus of Albanian literature and thinker Father Gjergj Fishta is recorded. To my knowledge, other original copies of this disc have been limited, so not in a high circulation like other music discs that were sold at the time," says Niko Kotherja.

He explained that, after a long time of work, correctly respecting the setting of 78 revolutions per minute, on both sides of the disc, in almost 7 minutes, the voice of the colossus could be clearly heard, reciting two of the songs of his masterpiece "Lahuta e malcis".

The disc, recorded in Shkodra, is believed to date from 1937 or 1938 and is the only surviving audio material of Father Gjergj Fishta. It is part of the collection of historian Kotherja, along with hundreds of other audio records dating back to before World War II. The other discs in this collection are diverse, such as folk music, patriotic songs, audio recordings of personalities such as Aleksandër Moisiu, etc.

It is worth noting that part of this collection are all the disc recordings of the "Flag Anthem", from 1918 to 1952. This collection includes recordings made by record companies in Italy, America, France, Turkey, etc.

Niko Kotherja told ATSH that there will be a presentation of this recording, which could come on an anniversary of Fishta or of events where he was a protagonist, such as the Manastir Congress.
