Tirana, the capital of Albania for 104 years!

On February 11, 1920, the government that emerged from the Congress of Lushnja settled in Tirana, thus officially announcing it as the capital of the country. This is the historical date of the arrival of the Albanian government in Tirana, headed by Sulejman Bey Delvina.

In the building at the beginning of Elbasan Street, the Albanian government was established.

" On this day, we commemorate the historic moment when Tirana was chosen as the heart of Albania. A city where tradition and modernity flow in harmony, where every street tells a story and every corner holds the promise of discovery. Appreciation to everyone who preserved the unique values of this city. Tirona is evidence of a wonderful story" - wrote the deputy of the Democratic Party, Jorida Tabaku.

As the date of establishment of Tirana as a city, in the heart of Albania, the year 1614 is taken, when with the care of Sulejman Pasha Bargjini, the first core of the city was built with a mosque.

In 1789 the Et'hem Bey mosque was started to be built, in 1830 the Clock Tower was erected, in the first half of the 19th century two bridges were built over the Lana River, the Tabaki bridge and the Terzij bridge.

Taps in Tirana, although few, were considered something sacred. We can mention here the kroi of Bane, the tap of the Kroi of Shengjin, etc.

But how would it change after 1920, when Tirana was declared the capital by the decision of the Congress of Lushnja and how did it return to the center of political and social life?

In 1922, by order of the Minister of Internal Affairs, the cemeteries that were located next to every mosque were removed, preventing not only the regulation of the market, but also that of the city. In this year, the new road of Durres was opened, which was baptized with the name " Nana Mbretneshë" , which destroyed many houses and gardens, because the old one that went from the "Durresi" hotel, did not allow to see the center of the city from afar. , - it is said in the documents of the time.

According to the data, at the end of this road connecting Tirana and Durrës, in 1930, the Italians began construction of the magnificent Hangar (that's how Rinas airport was called).

According to the data, it belonged to the Italian company " Ala Littoria ", a building with an iron frame and covered by iron sheets, which covered an area of 5000 square meters and had a height of about 35 meters.

In the same year, - according to the Municipality's bulletin, - the " 28 November " street was widened, a row of beautiful shops were demolished and the same street was formed that continues to be today.

For the first time, a regulatory plan was drawn up by engineer Eshref Frashëri and the city continued to be built according to a studied plan.

With the announcement of Tirana as the capital, most of the officials started building new houses, while the municipality would continue the projects for opening new roads and fixing the existing ones.

In 1926-1927, according to the documents that are now in the State Archives, the " Royal " road (the road of the Barricades) was opened for the first time, and within a very short time, it would become one of the main roads.

A little later, in 1928-1929, the " Mussolini " boulevard (today Kavaja Street), one of the main arteries of the capital, was widened and laid out, which was paved in 1934-1937.

At the beginning of this boulevard, the Central Palace of the National Bank of Albania was built, which occupied an area of 1500 square meters and cost 600,000 gold francs.

According to the documents, in 1930 what would be called the most beautiful and important street of Tirana, the "Zogu i Parë" boulevard, was built, starting from Kodra e Pasha to Brrakë.

All the arteries, for the most part, were paved with asphalt tiles in the most modern way and were decorated with exotic woods.

Thousands of houses were also built, which gave the new capital a very good look.

In the center of Zogu i Parë Boulevard, based on the project plan of the Italian architect, Florestano De Fausto, the six ministry buildings were built in 1931 and the City Hall building in 1929-1931, Skënderbej square was organized into a modern park in 1936 -1937, which would extend to the neighborhood of new Tirana, to the Shallvareve block.

According to the written documents of the time, the entire city had 7,654 houses and was inhabited by 24,407 permanent residents and 11,693 temporary residents. The entire city covered an area of 8 kilometers, whereas in 1912 it was only 3 square kilometers.

At the same time, many other streets of the capital were built and paved, which continue to have the same appearance and dimensions as they had since 1937.
