Military alliance between Albania, Kosovo and Croatia/DW: Tensions between

Belgrade and Pristina are intensifying their rhetoric after the signing of a declaration on a military alliance between Kosovo, Albania and Croatia. The declaration was signed two days ago in Tirana between the Albanian Defense Ministers Pirro Vengu, Ivan Anušić and Ejup Maqedonci, the Kosovo Minister of the Kosovo Security Force.

The three ministers said that the aim of this alliance between Albania, Kosovo and Croatia is cooperation in the field of defense and emphasized that the alliance is not a threat to anyone, but a message to those who intend to threaten the region.

The declaration on a military alliance between Kosovo, Albania and Croatia, signed in Tirana, aims to "promote cooperation in building defense capacities and the defense industry, increase interoperability through education, training and exercises, counter hybrid threats and strengthen strategic resilience, as well as provide full support for Euro-Atlantic and regional defense integration." Bulgaria has also been invited to join this alliance, making this alliance the first of its kind in the Western Balkans region.

Serbian Foreign Ministry speaks of provocation

Serbia's reaction through the Foreign Ministry was immediate, considering the agreement on the military alliance signed by the defense ministers of Kosovo, Albania and Croatia a "provocation". In its response, Serbia says that it "will send an urgent request to the foreign ministries of Croatia and Albania, requesting a detailed explanation."

"With this agreement, these two states, together with the illegal representative of the Provisional Institutions of Self-Government in Pristina, have taken steps that harm regional stability. Serbia, as a state that guarantees peace and military neutrality in the Balkans, rightly demands answers on the nature and objectives of this cooperation in the field of security," the official Belgrade response states, adding that "Serbia sees as a worrying fact why this military alliance was formed without any consultation with Belgrade."

"Serbia claims that the unilateral arming and military cooperation with illegal structures on the territory of Kosovo constitutes a serious violation of the international legal order and a direct threat to regional peace," reads the official Belgrade response.

Kosovo condemns Serbia's statement

On the other hand, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora of Kosovo strongly condemns Serbia's statement regarding the trilateral memorandum in the military field Kosovo-Croatia-Albania. According to Kosovo's Foreign Minister, Donika Gërvalla, Serbia's statement "is not only aggressive and threatening, but also constitutes a clear violation of the Brussels Agreements."

According to Gërvalla, "by making such statements, Serbia undermines its commitments to building good neighborly relations with Kosovo." "Serbia's rhetoric is filled with hegemonic tones, as it tries to present itself as the dominant power in the Western Balkans, demanding explanations from Croatia and Albania, two sovereign states, both members of NATO, with Croatia also a member of the European Union. This behavior is completely unacceptable and constitutes another violation of the Brussels Agreement, which clearly stipulates that Serbia will not hinder Kosovo's international relations and will not claim to speak on behalf of Kosovo in relations with other states and organizations," says Donika Gërvalla./DW
