Banjska remains armored by police forces, investigations continue after the
Kosovo police are continuing raids on houses and buildings in and around the village of Banjské in the north of Kosovo on Tuesday, two days after an armed fight with a group of people, from which one policeman and three attackers were killed.

The entrance to the village of Zveçan continues to be blocked and it is not known when it will be opened for traffic, the deputy director of the Kosovo Police for the northern region, Veton Elshani, told Radio Free Europe on September 26.

"The police have not yet finished their work, it is not known when they will do it, maybe today during the day", said Elshani.

In Banjska, the small village about 55 kilometers from the capital Pristina, only its residents can enter and leave with urgent needs, according to Elshan.

On September 24, in the early hours of the morning, the Kosovo Police was attacked by a group of masked and armed persons while they were on their way to investigate the blocking of a road by two trucks without license plates in Banjska. As a result, the Kosovo policeman Afrim Bunjaku was killed, while several other policemen were injured.

After attacking the police officers, the armed group fled and took refuge in the monastery of Banjska, where they continued fighting with the Kosovo police.

During the exchange of fire, the police killed three attackers of Serbian nationality, while arresting six others.

Meanwhile, on the evening of September 25, two more people were arrested for possession of weapons at the Banjska hotel.

Western countries strongly condemned the armed attack on the Kosovo police and demanded an urgent investigation and that the persons involved be brought to justice.

Kosovo has made Serbia responsible for the attack, while Belgrade officially blames the Kosovo Serbs.

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said on Sunday that a "terrorist and criminal formation of 30 people" took part in the attack.

Kurti described the armed attackers as "an organized professional unit that has come to fight in Kosovo."

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, said that the gunmen were local Serbs from Kosovo, "who could no longer suffer Kurt's terror".

Vucic condemned the killing of the Kosovo policeman, saying that it "cannot be justified", but denied that Belgrade had anything to do with the attack./ REL
