Jail sentence for parents who do not vaccinate their children
Authorities in Pakistan's Sindh province have passed a law that threatens parents with up to a month in jail if they refuse to vaccinate their children against polio or eight other diseases.
Experts from the World Health Organization fear the new measures will only further undermine confidence in polio vaccines, especially in a country where many believe in false conspiracies about them and where dozens of vaccinators have been killed.
Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan are the only countries where the spread of polio has never stopped. The disease mainly affects children under five years of age.
In January, some 62,000 parents, mostly in Pakistan's Sindh province, refused to vaccinate their children against polio, prompting authorities there to propose a new law with draconian penalties.
The law would punish parents with up to a month in jail for not vaccinating their children against certain diseases, and could also be fined up to 50,000 rupees ($168).
