A 9-year-old girl who disappeared on Saturday while playing with other children during a picnic with her family in New York, was found last night locked in the trailer of her suspected kidnapper, the authorities in the US announced.

47-year-old Craig Ross Jr. has been arrested as a suspected perpetrator of the serious incident and is being interrogated. The police had found Charlotte hidden and covered in the trailer, Governor Kathy Hochul announced, saying that the little girl "quickly realized that she was being rescued".

Armed police teams entered the property, where Ross is said to have initially resisted the intrusion. He has not yet been formally charged with the crime as questioning continues. The police have not published images of the detainee and it is not known if he knew the kidnapper's family.
