Chief Prosecutor West with the final word: Over 5 thousand pieces of evidence were admitted - no one is above the law
Chief Prosecutor Kimberly West announced in her closing statement today in The Hague that over 5,000 pieces of evidence and the testimony of more than 130 witnesses were considered during the 227 days of the trial.
She emphasized the importance of justice and accountability for victims who have experienced the consequences of crimes for more than 20 years.
"Over 5,000 exhibits have been admitted, 28,000 pages of transcripts are here, the record is voluminous, it presents the testimony of more than 130 witnesses who testified within 227 days of the trial. The court has also considered the written documents of more than 130 witnesses. It has been a privilege for me and the office that I represent to meet many of these people who experienced these events," said West.
West added that no one is above the law and justice must ensure accountability, including the most powerful people.
"People who have lived for more than 20 years with the consequences of crimes that they have suffered incomprehensibly, even the victims of crimes for which indictments have been filed. My office has worked to hold them accountable, these efforts and criminal proceedings are part of the most sacred principle of justice, the rule of law. The rule of law, in times of war, is more important. Many years have passed, and those who have lost family members, thought that they would not have justice, but the rule of law means that no one is above the law. Even the most powerful people will be held accountable. We demand based on evidence, which proves, we demand that the appropriate punishment be given. Thank you for the opportunity," she said.
