The general secretary of OPEC passes away

The Secretary General of OPEC, the Nigerian Mohammad Barkindo, died suddenly at the age of 63. His death leaves the oil cartel reeling at a turbulent time for markets.

Barkindo has led the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries since 2016 and was slated to be replaced by Kuwait's Haitham Al-Ghais next month.

Under his leadership, the cartel forged links with 10 other oil-producing nations, such as Russia, to form a broader group known as OPEC+ in an effort to better cushion global oil prices, rocked by challenges of the coronavirus pandemic and more recently from the war in Ukraine.

"This tragedy is a shock to the OPEC family," Vienna-based OPEC wrote.

"We express our deepest sorrow and gratitude for the more than 40 years of selfless service that Barkindo gave to OPEC. His dedication and leadership will inspire OPEC for many years to come."

Just hours earlier, Barkindo - who had shown no signs of being ill - had met with Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja, where Buhari praised Barkindo's “outstanding achievements in OPEC.
