NIGERIA/ Explosion in an oil refinery, at least 37 dead

At least 37 people died after an explosion at an illegal oil refinery in Emohua, Nigeria.
Among the victims were two pregnant women, residents and members of a local environmental group, according to Reuters.
According to the agency, the death toll is expected to rise, as many bodies were burned and dozens were injured. The police have confirmed that there was an incident, but no details are given.
Explosions at local refineries are common in oil-rich Nigeria, and operators often evade regulators by locating refineries in remote areas.
Workers in such facilities rarely follow safety procedures, causing frequent incidents. Recall that a fire in Imo state last year killed more than 100 people.
Oil theft is also common in the country, and from January 2021 to February 2022, Nigeria lost three billion dollars in crude oil due to theft.
