The UN arrives in Nagorno-Karabakh for the first time in 30 years, with a mission

A UN mission arrived in Nagorno-Karabakh today for the first time in three decades, Azerbaijan announced, at a time when most of the local Armenian population fled.
A spokesman for the Azeri presidency told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that the UN mission arrived "on Sunday morning" [today], with the main mission to assess humanitarian needs on the ground.
Earlier, the UN announced it had received the green light to send a mission to the region this weekend.
The Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh, who have controlled the enclave for three decades, capitulated and agreed to lay down their arms last week after an attack by Azerbaijan to retake the region.
In total, almost 600 people lost their lives after this military attack. About 200 soldiers from each camp were killed in the fighting.
Since then, the enclave has been almost entirely abandoned by its residents, with more than 100,000 reaching Armenia fearing reprisals from Azerbaijan, raising fears of a serious humanitarian crisis.
Today in Armenia, where most of the inhabitants are Christians, was a day of prayer for Nagorno-Karabakh. Church bells rang and the head of the Church, Karekin II, held a service in a cathedral near Yerevan.
While the organization of the reception of refugees continues with difficulty, the opponents of the Armenian Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, who is accused of passivity and fear of Moscow, took to the streets again yesterday, Saturday.
