Russia declares the Azov regiment of Ukraine a "terrorist group".

The Russian Supreme Court on Tuesday declared the Azov regiment of Ukraine a terrorist organization and decided that this regiment should be banned in Russia. The decision could expose Ukrainian prisoners of war held by Moscow to terrorism charges.

The Azov Regiment, which has played a key role in the defense of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, has been repeatedly portrayed by Russian officials and Russian state media as a Nazi formation, accusing it of committing atrocities against Ukrainian civilians. So far no evidence has been presented to support these claims.

The Azov Regiment is a unit within the National Guard of Ukraine. The regiment emerged from a group created in 2014 called the Azov Battalion that was one of many volunteer brigades formed to fight against Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Initially, the Azov battalion was joined by fighters from far-right circles and criticized for the tactics they used. Current members reject accusations of nationalism and radicalism.

In May, the Office of the Prosecutor General of Russia requested that this regime be declared a terrorist organization.

Dozens of Azov fighters are imprisoned by Moscow. Russian authorities have initiated dozens of criminal cases against them, accusing them of killing civilians.

Last week, dozens of Ukrainian prisoners of war were killed after the detention center where they were being held was hit by airstrikes.

The detention center that was attacked is located in Olenivka, in the territory controlled by pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine. Moscow and Kiev have exchanged accusations about the attack, as Kiev has said that Russia attacked this center to hide evidence of torture of prisoners of war./REL
