The medieval Jewish sites in Erfurt, Germany are included in UNESCO

The UN World Heritage Committee has declared a group of medieval Jewish sites in the eastern German city of Erfurt a World Heritage Site, marking the second time Jewish heritage in the country has been added to the list in recent years.

The Jewish monuments in Erfurt were almost forgotten for centuries and their rediscovery is a great gift, said the president of the German UNESCO Commission, Maria Behmer. Erfurt's Old Synagogue, a 13th-century stone building, has also been included in the world heritage site, AP reported.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the UN World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, under the auspices of UNESCO. The pogroms of the The historical importance of the Old Synagogue was rediscovered and established only in 1988.

Paris-based UNESCO launched the World Heritage List in 1978 and includes more than 1,000 sites from the Acropolis in Athens to the Great Wall of China. In 2021, UNESCO included the Jewish cultural heritage in Germany for the first time on the World Heritage List.

In that year, the Jewish sites in the cities of Mainz, Worms and Speyer on the Rhine were included in the World Heritage List. After the inclusion of Erfurt, the total number of World Heritage sites in Germany increased to 52.
