The first lady of Ukraine: The war has made my son want to become a soldier

Ukraine's First Lady Olena Zelenska says the war in Ukraine has made her nine-year-old son want to become a soldier.

In an interview with NBC, Mrs. Zelenska said that now the only thing her son Kyrylo wants to do is "martial arts and how to use a rifle."

She added that she hoped her son's childhood would be "returned" to him.

Ms Zelenska, the wife of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, was on a visit to the US, where she had asked for more weapons for Ukraine.

Speaking about the impact of the five-month war with Russia on her son, she said: "Before the war, my son went to the folk dance ensemble. He played the piano, he learned English."

But after the invasion of Russia, "clearly he wants to be a soldier," she said. "I can't turn it into arts and humanities.

"And that's what I really want to ensure is that my son's childhood comes back to him and that he enjoys his life to the fullest."

Ms Zelenska, who is also the mother of 18-year-old Oleksandra, spoke about the plight of other children and parents during her visit to the US.

During a 15-minute speech to the US Congress on Wednesday, she presented photos and videos of Ukrainian children who have been killed or injured during the war.

Members of Congress have been largely supportive of Ukraine's demands for more security aid and have so far provided Ukraine with around $8bn (£6.7bn).

During her visit to the US, Ms Zelenska - who has taken a more public role recently - also met US President Joe Biden, First Lady Jill Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
