Auction opens for pocket watch belonging to a Titanic passenger

A woman's pocket watch, found among the belongings of one of the passengers who drowned during the tragic voyage of the Titanic, could fetch up to £50,000 at auction.
Danish second-class passenger Hans Christensen Givard, 27, was among 1,500 people who died when the ship struck an iceberg in 1912.
Givard was traveling to the United States with two friends, who also died in the disaster.
The watch was found when Givard's body was found in the North Atlantic and later buried in Halifax, Canada.
A savings book, keys, money in a wallet, a silver watch, a compass, and a passport were found in the pockets.
A pocket watch was also found, which shows traces of salt corrosion.
All of his assets were returned to his brother in Denmark, and it is his descendants who are selling the watch.
Givard's unfortunate story directly inspired curator Jesper Hjermind and his niece, journalist and US resident Mette Hjermind McCall, to write the book "Titanic - The Danish Stories", in which the pocket watch is mentioned.
It was also exhibited by Claes Goran Wetterholm, the world's leading authority on the Scandinavian element in the story of the "Titanic", in Copenhagen in 2012.
The watch will be auctioned by Henry Aldridge and Son on April 26.
