This is the true story of this sacred painting for every Christian believer.

Who among you has never seen this painting? It is very famous and can be found in almost every home. It is the most reproduced “ Saint Mary ” of all time.
In fact , the painting portrays an eleven-year-old girl, Angela Cian, with her younger brother Giovanni in her arms. The painter Roberto Ferruzzi (Dalmatia 1853 – Luvigliano, Euganean Hills, 1934) was the son of a well-known lawyer and, after classical studies, enrolled in the law faculty of the “ University of Padua ” .
He was very talented in painting . While continuing his university courses, he also studied drawing and painting , and devoted himself to music. In 1879 he settled in Luvigliano (Euganeian Hills) where he devoted himself exclusively to painting, creating a cultural museum that became the destination of the greatest artists of the time.
One day he saw a girl, Angelina Cian, the second of fifteen children in her family , holding her sleeping little brother Giovanni in her arms. Their image left the painter speechless for the sweetness that children transmitted , and he reproduced it in a painting , which he titled “ Motherhood ”. The painting was exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1897 and was awarded, but the success it had , made other artists request to change the title to “ Saint Mary ” .
The painting was bought for three thousand lire, an astronomical figure for the time, and was resold several times. Finally , it was purchased by the Alinari brothers, famous photographers from Florence , who exhibited it in their studio. It was resold again, but the Alinari brothers reserved the rights to reproduce it. “ Saint Mary ” was reproduced in thousands of copies, tickets, “holy cards,” and cult objects .
During World War II, the American ambassador to France, John GA Leishman, purchased the painting, but during the voyage to the United States the ship capsized and the beautiful Maria ended up at the bottom of the sea. Some claim that it was not lost, but is in a private collection in Pennsylvania.
The girl in the portrait, Angelina, who inspired Marina , had meanwhile moved to Venice. She married and went with her husband, in 1906, to California, to Oakland. She had ten children, but her happiness was cut short by the sudden death of her husband. Widowed, she was unable to cope with the misfortunes of life; her children were taken to an orphanage and she, in despair, was interned in an asylum. She died in 1972. She did not know that her face would inspire millions of believers around the world./ Bota.al
