The shield of Aeneas and the glory of Rome

In the Aeneid, the shield of the Trojan hero is described in great detail. It was forged by Vulcan at the request of Venus, mother of Aeneas, together with the helmet, sword, armor and arrow: all the weapons were then personally delivered by the goddess to her son before the battle against the Laurents, and the decisive challenge against King Turnus.
Vulcan decorated the spectacular shield, carving on it the decisive moments of the future history of Rome, which Aeneas read and admired as prophecies. The scenes depict Romulus and Remus being fed by the she-wolf, the torture of Mettius Fufetius by order of Tullus Hostilius, the siege of Porsenna, and the heroism of Orazio Coclites and Clelias.
In the center of the shield are engraved the naval battle of Actium (31 BC) and the triumph of Augustus. Between the center and the crown, there is a sea filled with dolphins. / bota.al
