Record number of fossilized dinosaur footprints found in Bolivia

Paleontologists have identified a record number of fossilized dinosaur footprints along an ancient Bolivian coast, according to a study published in the scientific journal PLOS One.
Researchers led by Raul Esperante of the California Geoscience Research Institute documented about 16,000 fossilized tracks of three-toed theropod dinosaurs at nine study sites at the Carreras Pampas track site in Torotoro National Park, in central Bolivia.
The researchers analyzed data collected from 1,275 tracks – creating a detailed picture of the dinosaurs' size distribution and behavior that included turning, tail-dragging, and swimming.
"The large number of tracks allows the characterization of populations that left their traces on a single bed surface - during the last phase of the Cretaceous period - around 72 million to 66 million years ago," the researchers said.
The tracks range from under 10 centimeters to over 30 centimeters. According to the authors, the range of track sizes and the diversity of morphotypes suggest that a diverse group of organisms left their tracks at the site.
"This site is a stunning window into the past of this area. Not only how many dinosaurs may have moved through this area, but also what they were doing as they moved," the authors said in a press release.
"It's amazing to work in this place, because everywhere you look, the ground is covered with dinosaur tracks," they said.
