Study warns of massive catastrophe: 4,000 glaciers could disappear every year

Global warming is pushing the world towards a mass extinction of glaciers. Scientists are talking about a point of no return for the planet when they say that up to 4,000 glaciers could disappear every year.
Climate change is no longer just melting glaciers, it's wiping them off the face of the planet. That's the warning of scientists who say the world is approaching what they call "peak glacier extinction," a period when thousands of them will disappear completely every year.
A study published in the scientific journal Nature Climate Change predicts that by the middle of this century, the number of glaciers disappearing could reach up to 4,000 per year if greenhouse gas emissions continue at current rates.
This would be equivalent to losing all the glaciers of the European Alps in just one year.
Researchers analyzed more than 200,000 glaciers around the world and found that many of them will become so small that they can no longer be considered glaciers. According to them, this is not just melting, but complete disappearance.
If global warming is limited to 1.5 degrees Celsius, the extinction will peak around 2040 with about 2,000 glaciers a year. But if temperatures rise to 4 degrees, the peak shifts to the 2050s and the losses double.
The most at risk regions are those with small glaciers, such as the European Alps, the Andes and parts of North Asia, where more than half of the glaciers are expected to disappear within two decades.
Scientists warn that the loss of glaciers will have serious consequences for water supplies, tourism, ecosystems and the cultural heritage of many communities.
Glaciers, they say, are the most visible symbol of the climate crisis and their disappearance is an alarm that can no longer be ignored.
