Study: TikTok and Instagram damage the brain!

A new study has sparked a broader debate about the impact of short-form video platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts on mental health and brain function. According to the research, which involved nearly 100,000 individuals of all ages, intensive use of these platforms is associated with a significant decrease in concentration and more fragmented attention.
The researchers explain that the nature of fast-paced videos creates a constant cycle of immediate stimulation, which tricks the brain into seeking out only quick, easy, and immediate content. This, they say, can over time negatively impact the ability to focus on longer tasks, such as reading or studying. Furthermore, participants who consumed greater amounts of short-form videos reported more disrupted sleep, higher levels of anxiety, and increased feelings of loneliness.
However, experts stress that the results should not be interpreted as conclusive. They underline that more research is needed to understand whether short videos are the main cause of these problems or simply a concomitant factor of an increasingly fast-paced and information-overloaded lifestyle.
Meanwhile, the rise in popularity of TikTok and similar platforms continues to raise questions about their long-term impact, especially among young people, who constitute the group most exposed to this type of content.
