New variant of COVID-19 in circulation: what is known about 'Cicada'?

At a time when the COVID-19 pandemic seemed to have receded into the background, a new subvariant has regained the attention of global health authorities. It is BA.3.2, also known as “Cicada”, part of the Omicron family.
This variant is being closely monitored by institutions such as the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, especially due to its spread in several countries, including the United States and Thailand. However, experts emphasize that there is no room for panic at this stage.
According to preliminary data, “Cicada” behaves similarly to previous Omicron variants. In most cases, the infection manifests with mild to moderate symptoms and there has been no significant increase in severe cases or hospitalizations.
The most common symptoms include mild fever, sore throat, fatigue, cough, and runny nose — a picture already familiar to the public from previous waves of the pandemic. Although its spread has been reported in more than 20 countries, the scientific community has not yet identified any indications that this subvariant poses a higher risk compared to its predecessors.
Health authorities continue to call for vigilance and monitoring of the situation, emphasizing that the evolution of the virus remains unpredictable. At this stage, "Cicada" is considered more of a development to be closely followed than a serious new threat to public health.
