Edi Rama was invited to the show "The Unexposed" on MCN TV, where he debated with journalist Ylli Rakipi regarding the increase in pensions.
Rakipi told Rama that the DP has increased pensions more than his government, specifically by 68% in eight years. Rama called this "stupidity" and "idiocy."
Ylli Rakipi : Let's move on to pensions. The average pension today is 172 euros, while those in the village are lower. The average pensioner must live on 5.7 euros per day. According to the WHO methodology, anyone who lives on less than 6.85 dollars per day is considered poor. So these are poor.
Edi Rama : You take one piece there and take it out of context. There are three other pieces that say something else.

Edi Rama: This is a more complex story than that. Today there are two blocs of pensioners, divided like us here at this table. The bloc of pensioners who retired before we came to government and those who retired after we came to power and made the reform in 2014. If you take the pensioners who retired after the reform, they have higher pensions, because in Albania there was no pension system but assistance, totally idiotic, I'm not saying criminal.
Ylli Rakipi : The DP, or the swamp as you call it, has increased pensions more than you did when it was in power. In 2005, the city pension was 83 thousand lek and at the end of 2013 it went to 140 thousand lek. An increase of 68%.
Edi Rama : This is nonsense, idiotic, this does not make sense. Let me explain, until 2013 there was no pension system in Albania, it was assistance. The right to receive a pension based on contributions was not recognized, but it was said that the ceiling was 24 thousand lek and whoever retired received assistance. Take a teacher today who retired in 2016, take one before 2014, she has a lower pension. These are useless chatter. This new increase in salaries does not work, because the state is collapsing.
Ylli Rakipi : You say that those pensioners who have retired from the DP will never change?
Edi Rama: All pensioners who have retired during our government have higher pensions.
Ylli Rakipi : The DP increased pensions to 140 thousand lek and you increased them to 180 thousand.
Edi Rama : The pension is based on contributions. For full pensions, we have an average of 300 euros. For pensions with full years, we have established the system as in Europe and the world. There is another block left, who are not retired on the basis of contributions, they have been left out. There are also rural pensions, who have not made contributions. We want to do, we have made compensations, we have given bonuses, here in addition to pensions, we have many significant bonuses that we give. We want to increase the average pension for those who are on full pensions from 300-400 euros. For those who are on the lowest, we should increase the minimum pension to 200 euros.
Ylli Rakipi: So, on par with the Democratic Party.
Edi Rama: They have nothing in their hands and will have nothing in their hands. We are sitting with the EU and negotiating every hair on the state's skin, we are not on the program...
