Former Democratic MP Ervin Salianji said that the race for the leadership of the DP cannot be controlled by the current leadership, Sali Berisha.
In a live broadcast on the central news edition of Vizion Plus with moderator Aleksandër Furxhi, Salianji said that the dissatisfaction of the Democrats has been evident recently.
Regarding the DP's statement that he and others have "self-excluded", Salianji called it invalid.
Salianji also stressed that he will run despite the obstacles, arguing that the DP statute does not allow Berisha to run due to the failure to achieve the objective of turning the party into a governing force.
Several Democratic Party militants from Durrës, supporters of Ervin Salianj, protested at the party's headquarters. Can we say, after today's episode and those of recent weeks, that the door of the official Democratic Party is finally closed to an alternative candidacy to Mr. Berisha?
Ervin Salianji: I can't say this for sure. What I can say is that the leadership's and Mr. Berisha's fear of running has real foundations, because democrats everywhere are dissatisfied, desperate, and demand accountability from the DP leadership for the election results, as well as for the repeated failure to keep promises.
Salianji, it is not well understood what comes after this situation for you, when the Democratic Party declares that you and others are self-excluded. What comes next?
Ervin Salianji: That statement doesn't matter, it's like Edi Rama saying that the DP is excluded from the race. This can't happen. A candidate, in this case Mr. Berisha, cannot exclude another candidate, the opponent cannot choose his rival or the voters. It's for the "Guinness Records" that the leadership of a party seeks to choose the members, when in fact the members should choose the leaders. The Durrës case showed that the Democrats demand accountability for the abuses that are being committed to usurp the function of the mayor.
You said that Berisha cannot exclude candidates or voters, but voting day comes and Salianjaj has not been opened or registered. What happens specifically if your name is not on the ballot?
Ervin Salianji: I do not ask anyone for permission to run for the party where I am a member and where I have contributed. What will happen with the ballot remains to be seen. I know that Article 46 of the DP Statute prohibits Mr. Berisha from running, because he did not achieve the objective of turning the DP into a governing force. This was his promise, that he would defeat Edi Rama. Politics is done on the basis of public promises, if you do not fulfill them, you have to face the vote.
Salianji, you went to prison for a denunciation that was produced by consensus in the then headquarters of the DP. Berisha came to you in prison with books. Do you feel disappointment, anger or a desire for revenge today?
Ervin Salianji: I am in a political battle to win the support of the democrats and citizens, with the aim of removing Edi Rama an hour ago. Every effort of mine has been to improve the lives of citizens and to have accountability before the law. I do not fight for personal interest, but for a more democratic society, starting from the democratization of our parties. My concern is that the DP should not only be an alternative, but ready to bring about rotation, because as it is, it has been proven that we cannot win. If it were for personal interest, I could have chosen to stay like some others, but I have chosen the public interest.
