The next hearing is being held at the Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime for the " Gërdec tragedy " case, where the defendant is former Minister of Defense, Fatmir Mediu.

He has opposed the analysis of the experts of the technical-military expertise act, rejecting any direct responsibility of the Ministry of Defense for the tragedy.

During the session, Mediu emphasized that the handling of ammunition was an exclusive competence of the Armed Forces and not of the minister. “ For every government decision, there was a ministerial order and after every ministerial order, another order or instruction from the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, this is how it works in the Ministry of Defense, ” he said.

The media outlet also explained that the SAC company was not only responsible for dismantling, but also for demilitarizing the ammunition – rendering it ineffective and harmless.

According to him, this aspect had not been fulfilled by the company and this had been pointed out to him by the authorities.

"The FA had a duty to supervise. Senior FA officials, according to evidence, have visited Gërdec. They have not implemented the obligations ordered by the VKM ," stated the former minister, underlining that the lack of fulfillment of obligations by the FA was essential in this process.

The hearing is expected to continue with further examination of evidence and testimony, while Mediu's defense has warned that it will seek new expertise to shed light on the concrete responsibilities of the institutions involved.
