The Greek media Ekathemerini writes that the American State Department has sent a message to the Albanian authorities that Washington expects the rule of law to be respected in the case of the elected mayor of Himara, but not sworn in, Fredi Beleri.
Responding to Ekathemerini newspaper correspondents in Washington, a spokesperson for the State Department said, "we are aware of the case and expect the Albanian authorities to follow due process according to the laws of the country."
Beler has been in prison since May 12 this year after he was arrested for buying votes on the eve of the May 14 local elections.
The Prosecutor's Office accuses the winner of the elections in Himare of having given 40,000 new lek to 8 citizens to vote in his favor during the local elections.
Keeping him in prison has brought a clash with the official Athens, which accuses the Albanian government of politically imprisoning Fredi Beleri in order not to allow him to be sworn in as mayor.
