"Our parties have become a curse and a threat" Krasniqi: The first pluralist parliament was part-time for MPs

“The first pluralist parliament in Albania was part-time for the deputies.” This is what analyst Afrim Krasniqi said on Off the Record with Andrea Dangli on A2 CNN, providing details on the first years of transition. He recalled that in the first pluralist parliament, many deputies were teachers, doctors or employees of other professions, who only went to the session for a few hours and received honoraria. According to him, the meaning of the separation of powers came very late in Albania.
"When the first pluralist parliament convened, you know that the first parliament was with a parliament before me, those physical education teachers, doctors, etc. continued their work. They would go for two hours and receive honoraria in parliament. The parliament controlled the executive and the parliament worked in the executive and the executive had the duty to provide a car for the district deputies to bring them to Tirana and back home. When they realized that there is a separation of powers, it was too late. And today we are divided at this point. It is not the thesis that everyone is free to contribute", Krasniqi said on Off the Record with Andrea Dangli on A2 CNN.
In his view, Krasniqi sees political parties in Albania as private property and a threat, at a time when they should have been national assets and defenders of causes.
"Our parties have become a curse, they should have been assets, our parties have become a threat, they should have been collaborators, our parties have become bunkers, they should have been advocates of civic causes. They lack the word party and democracy. They have become private property. Our system is rejecting, denigrating and insulting to our children today."
