Report on Albania, Marta Kos in the EP: SPAK's independence must be

STRASBOURG - European Union Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, delivered her speech at the European Parliament session where the progress reports for Albania for 2023 and 2024 were discussed.

Kos praised the work and good results achieved by the Special Anti-Corruption Prosecution Office.

She stated that SPAK has taken positive steps that are also evidenced in the reports of the European Parliament.

The Commissioner said that SPAK is today the most trusted institution in the country and this should not be affected.

"The good results of the special structure against organized crime and corruption, SPAK, are positive steps that are also highlighted in the Parliament's report.

It is vital that Albania continues to show concrete progress in key areas.

In this context, the independence of the special structure against corruption and organized crime, SPAK, must be fully preserved.

"SPAK is today the most trusted institution in the country. This must be protected and strengthened ," said Marta Kos.

She further stated that the talks with Albania are proceeding at a rapid pace, although she added that there is still much work to be done. She emphasized that work is also being done with the Danish presidency to maintain this pace.

"This report comes at a crucial moment, as the membership negotiations between Albania and the EU are proceeding at an unprecedented pace, as we have heard, with several important achievements accomplished in recent months and others expected.

This shows that Albania is seriously engaged in the enlargement process, while the EU is acting in accordance with the merit-based approach.

"We are working closely with the Danish Presidency to keep up the pace. We believe that the remaining two groups will also open as soon as possible ," Kos said.
