"Albania is a case in point", Berisha: If the EU looks more at stability, it is an ally of authoritarianism

The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, during the conference "The Western Balkans Paradigm" said that European integration is one of the key priorities of the DP, while emphasizing that democracy and the rule of law cannot be sacrificed in the name of stability.
Berisha underlined that politics should always be oriented towards democratic standards and European integration.
He described Albania as a typical case where stability has been put before democracy and this has brought serious consequences in political developments.
Berisha: I would like to start by thanking Mr. Patrick Voller, Mr. Tomi Huhtanen and others for their presence here, which is a great help, it is a great assistance for the DP and the opposition.
We are very grateful to you and we assure you that our party remains fully committed to maintaining the principles and values that our family, the EPP, has with us and with other countries.
Your question is of fundamental importance, in the sense that EU integration is an essential process for my nation, for our nations and is the polar star of our program.
I consider geopolitics almost a natural force, which should always be taken seriously.
But giving it priority over integration through standards, democracy, the rule of law and good governance, which are the foundations of the integration process, in my opinion is a terrible and historic mistake.
On the one hand, this means a betrayal of fundamental human rights and freedoms, of the ideals and aspirations of a candidate country because the fact that they see a better future in the EU, they think and have the right to think that they will be freer, more prosperous in the market economy and more decent citizens.
But if you give priority to stabilocracy compared to standards, or accession for the sake of stability, this means that you give way to and are in alliance with autocracy.
I think that no free EU country would want this result.
Anyone who has any doubts, let them come to Albania and study the case.
Albania is a typical case. It has given priority to stabilocracy compared to standards and this was transformed into an autocratic state.
But also for the EU itself, it is not only a serious moral problem with the candidate countries, but it also means planting a virus in its foundations without knowing what the consequences will be for the future.
A merit-based process is in the vital interest of the citizens of the candidate countries.
It is the best way to help these countries break ties with the past.
