Student protests and demand for Rama's removal, DP requests urgent plenary session

The Parliamentary Group of the Democratic Party has addressed the Albanian Parliament with a request to hold an urgent plenary session, in which to discuss the situation created after eight days of student and youth protests.
In the announcement, DP deputies state that protesters continue to demand the removal of Prime Minister Edi Rama, raising concerns about governance, corruption, and what they describe as the abandonment of young people by the government.
One of the main issues of the request is the treatment of protesters by the State Police. The opposition says that during the protests, cases of excessive use of force against students, minors, women and girls have been observed.
The PD also says that physical injuries have been reported, including fractures, head injuries and other injuries, as well as injuries that, according to it, are related to the use of rubber bullets and chemicals.
DP group announcement
For eight days, Albanian students and young people have been continuing their protest against arrogance, misgovernment, government corruption and abandonment by the Government, articulating as their sole demand the removal of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
During these days of protest, we, the deputies of the Albanian Parliament, have observed serious acts of violence against students and young people. These acts, which demonstrate a disturbing and unacceptable use of force by the State Police, have not spared minors, women and girls. As a result, serious physical injuries have been reported, including fractures of limbs, head injuries, other bodily injuries, as well as injuries caused by the use of rubber bullets and chemicals.
In the face of this unprecedented situation, it is particularly concerning that the Albanian Parliament has not only failed to take steps to seek institutional accountability regarding the actions of State Police employees, a significant portion of whom, according to findings made during the protests, were not carrying identification, but has also canceled the scheduled plenary session, without prior notice and without providing a reasoned explanation for this decision.
Under these conditions, assessing the seriousness of the situation and the need for the exercise of the constitutional and institutional responsibilities of the Assembly, in support of Article 31 of the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly, we request the convening of a plenary session within today or, alternatively, on Wednesday, with an agenda limited to the following point:
– “Discussion on the protest of students and youth, their demand for the removal of Prime Minister Edi Rama, as well as the acts of violence exercised by the State Police against minors, students and youth.”
We believe that the Albanian Parliament has the institutional obligation to guarantee transparency, accountability and parliamentary scrutiny of this situation, enabling its discussion in a plenary session and demanding accountability for any violation of the law found.
Requesting you to take the necessary measures to review this request urgently, in accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly
