Rai News: Albania, student anger erupts
Fires and violent clashes between protesters and riot police marked the second consecutive day of violent protests in Tirana. Students returned to the streets against Edi Rama's government, opposing high university fees, a lack of support for young people, poor job prospects after graduation, and a project to build a luxury hotel in a protected natural area.
Yesterday, two fires engulfed the Ministry of Education and a branch of Raiffeisen Bank, in front of which thousands of protesters had gathered. The day before, the ministry building had been hit with stones and bricks, while the city hall building was engulfed in flames.
Violent protests continue in Tirana, while the Ministry of Education building has caught fire. Citizens are demanding the resignation of PM Rama & the removal of opposition leader Berisha-two strongmen who have dominated Albania for nearly 40 years with abuse & massive corruption https://t.co/wfE4N6SM8d
On several streets in the center, protesters set up barricades and threw stones, fireworks and Molotov cocktails at the police, who responded with water cannons and tear gas. Police announced that 28 people had been arrested yesterday alone.
"Protest is a legitimate right, but it cannot be used as a pretext for violence, the destruction of the city or ugly clashes in the middle of the street," declared Deputy Prime Minister Albana Koçiu.
"I appeal to students and every honest citizen who believes in the right to protest: distance yourself from violence and vandalism," she added. /Rai News
