Jean-Claude Camille François Van Varenberg (born October 18, 1960), known professionally as Jean-Claude Van Damme (in Albanian Jean-Claude Van Dam), is a Belgian martial artist, actor, director and best known for films his fighting which include Bloodsport (1988), Kickboxer (1989), Universal Soldier (1992), Hard Target (1993), Timecop (1994), Sudden Death (1995) and JCVD (2008). He is known as "muscles from Brussels".
After intensive studies in martial arts since the age of ten, Van Damme achieved national success in Belgium as a martial artist and gymnast, winning the title of "Belgium Lord" in bodybuilding. He immigrated to the United States in 1982 to pursue a career in film, and achieved success with Bloodsport (1988), based on a story written by Frank Dux. He achieved his late success in Timecop (1994), which grossed over $100 million worldwide and became his most financially successful film.
Van Damme has had problems with cocaine since 1995. He entered a lengthy rehab program in 1996, but left it after just one week. In 1996, he spent up to $10,000 a week on cocaine. He is also reported to have experienced bipolar disorder. A turning point in his health issues came in 1997, after he signed divorce papers accused of spousal abuse and drug addiction. In 1998, Van Damme finally broke his drug addiction.
