The undisputed icon of Hollywood/ Marilyn Monroe, a life between glory and darkness, 63 years since the death of the mythical actress
She was only 36 years old. Her death shocked public opinion and sparked a host of theories and debates that have not died down even after more than 60 years. Authorities ruled it a possible suicide, but the circumstances of the fatal night remain enigmatic and continue to raise questions.
On the evening of August 4, 1962, Monroe was at her home on Fifth Helena Drive. According to reports, she had been on the phone with friends and associates and appeared distraught. At around 3:30 a.m., her caretaker, Eunice Murray, noticed a light coming from the bedroom and became alarmed.
She notified Marilyn's personal psychiatrist, Dr. Ralph Greenson, who forced his way into the room through a window. There, he found Monroe lying on the bed, naked, face down, her phone in her hand, and several empty medicine bottles on the nightstand.
An autopsy was conducted by medical examiner Thomas Noguchi, who found lethal levels of pentobarbital and chloral hydrate in her blood and liver. The concentrations were several times above the permitted toxicological limits.
The coroner's office concluded that the death was most likely a suicide by overdose. No suicide note was found – something not uncommon in such cases – and the possibility of an accident was ruled out.
In the last months of her life, Marilyn experienced serious mental health problems. She suffered from anxiety, depression, and insomnia, and was under constant treatment with powerful medications. She had recently been admitted to a psychiatric clinic.
Her career was going through a rough patch: 20th Century Fox had dropped her from the film “Something's Got to Give” due to frequent absences. In her personal life, she had gone through three divorces and was rumored to have affairs with powerful political figures – including brothers John and Robert Kennedy.
Conspiracy Theories and Case Review
Despite the official conclusion, her death remained shrouded in suspicion. Conspiracy theories include possible murder, involvement of the secret services, and a cover-up by high-ranking political figures, precisely because of her alleged ties to the Kennedy family.
In 1982, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office reopened the case, but no new evidence was found to suggest any criminal activity. The death was again ruled a "probable suicide."
Marilyn Monroe's funeral was held on August 8, 1962, in a private ceremony organized by her ex-husband, Joe DiMaggio. Only about thirty people were present - mostly family and close friends. No journalists, photographers or famous Hollywood figures were allowed, in order to preserve her dignity in her final moments.
Monroe was buried at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.
Her death further solidified her legendary status. Marilyn Monroe became the ultimate symbol of beauty, femininity, and tragedy. Although her life was cut short, her image as a “fragile goddess of the big screen” remains vivid and captivating for generations.
63 years later, the world still remembers August 5, 1962 not only as the end of a life, but as the beginning of an immortal legend.
