Miley Cyrus opens up about her health challenges and substance use

Miley Cyrus has opened up about her difficult health journey during a live performance, as well as the transformation her decision to quit drinking and marijuana brought to her life. The 32-year-old singer didn't hesitate to admit that both her return to sobriety and the physical ordeal she experienced pushed her to her limits, but also helped her find herself again.
In an interview with Zane Lowe, Miley Cyrus revealed that she suffered a ruptured ovarian cyst during her New Year's Eve show, "Miley's New Year's Eve Party," which she hosted with Dolly Parton in 2023. " I had a pretty traumatic experience at a show that I did with Lorne Michaels, when I did my New Year's Eve show ," she said, adding, " I had a medical emergency. I had a ruptured ovarian cyst. We didn't know exactly what was going on, so we did it. It was very traumatic, because it was unbearable and I was doing the show normally. But it was really, really hard for me."
This incident made him consider giving up music, but a conversation with Lorne Michaels proved decisive:
“ He said to me, ‘Six months. Everyone has six months to feel sorry for themselves and then we start rebuilding.’ You have no idea how many artists have sat in this chair and told me they’re quitting music. Everyone does it, everyone goes through these traumatic experiences.”
At the same time, Cyrus confessed that the decision to stop drinking alcohol and using marijuana was perhaps the most defining moment in her life: " I've learned something about myself over the years: sobriety is like my God. I need it, I live for it. I mean, it's changed my whole life."
Although he admitted that during the pandemic he strayed from sobriety for a while, he felt he had to go through this situation as well: " I know I had to fall again... There were moments that hurt me. I'm not proud of them, but they pushed me to write "Flowers," which was a key that unlocked the whole healing. It healed me a lot."
She described her Grammy win for “Flowers” as a poignant moment of affirmation: “ Maybe it was the child inside me.” I don’t know what it was, but I needed something to hold on to that would make me feel like I had truly won. “Getting the Grammy for ‘Flowers’ was like a bandage on a broken heart.”
Despite the difficulties, the singer is preparing her new album "Something Beautiful" and declares that she is ready to reintroduce herself to her audience, this time with more clarity and truth.
