"Good morning, beautiful girl," Gene Hackman and his wife's love

The tragic death of Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, continues to be the center of discussion, not only for the tragedy of the couple's living conditions, but also for the strong love that seems to have existed between them, which was revealed through a series of handwritten notes exchanged between them.

The couple was found dead inside their Santa Fe residence on February 26. Gene Hackman, 95, died of a heart attack with complications from Alzheimer's disease, about a week after the death of Betsy Arakawa, 65, who breathed her last while suffering from hantavirus, a virus transmitted through rats.

During a search of the couple's home by the New Mexico Police Department, documents and photographs were found, including handwritten notes from Gene Hackman to his wife and vice versa. In them, the actor appears to repeatedly express his gratitude and love for her, almost always signing them with the phrase "With love" and his initials.

One of the most touching notes was an apology letter to his wife, apologizing for needing her help to prepare a dinner for her birthday. “Good morning,” the note began, and continued: “Happy day after your birthday.” I’m sorry about the dinner and I have to ask for your help, although it was appreciated. I love you and the kids too. T.”

In other notes he addressed her as "beautiful girl", while in one he recounts: "Good morning beautiful girl. I'm thinking of you and our little ones", perhaps alluding to their pets.

At the same time, Gene Hackman, who was already suffering from Alzheimer's, seemed to be aware of his condition.  "I'm going to see the magician... he's stabbing me here, stabbing me there... but I'll survive, because I'm still alive, sometimes, marginally,"  he writes in a note, maintaining humor until the end.

Betsy Arakawa also left him notes with little memories, details about her program, or simple tokens of affection. In one letter, she informs him that she took their dog to the vet, leaving him a puzzle to keep him busy while she was away.

Authorities also found a pile of solved puzzles on a table in the house, proving that this activity was part of their shared daily routine.

In her latest emails, Gene Hackman's wife appears to have researched flu symptoms and breathing techniques, concerned about Gene Hackman's health, who has been showing symptoms. He has also requested medical help at home, which he has not received.

Police have also released video of the moment the couple's bodies were found. Betsy Arakawa was found in a bathroom at the home and Gene Hackman in the hallway. Their dog was left next to her, while a second animal was found dead in a cage, from dehydration and starvation.

The couple had been together since the mid-1980s and had withdrawn from public life, living out of the spotlight in Santa Fe. Betsy, an Arakawa born in Hawaii in 1959, had studied piano and was a cheerleader and production assistant. She met Gene Hackman when he was working at a gym in California. Together they moved to New Mexico, where she was a manager at a decor store, while Gene Hackman retired from acting in the early 2000s, devoting his time to painting, writing, and drawing.
