Selena Gomez opens up about being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and raising awareness about mental health issues

Selena Gomez has spoken out about her mental health many times. In a recent interview with Billboard Español, the singer, who revealed in 2022 that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, made another statement and explained why she continues to fight for awareness around mental health issues. Although it wasn't easy for her to speak out publicly, Gomez confessed that she did so in the hope of helping other people.
"At the end of the day, I think it's important to talk about issues that concern you, whether you're famous or not. It's not for the faint of heart, because you're exposed and there's going to be a lot of opinions against you just for daring to say something," said Gomez, who will be honored as Billboard's Latina Female Artist of the Year on May 1.
Gomez recalled the first time she decided to share her personal journey with the world and the fear she felt at the time: It was scary to be so vulnerable and I never wanted anyone to think I was a victim. I thought that by sharing my story I could help others and I would accept any negative thoughts that come with it because I see the big picture, how the conversation around mental health has changed.
Gomez has been vocal about her mental health, and in May 2023, she hosted the third annual Rare Beauty Mental Health Summit. In October of that year, she hosted the first Rare Impact Fund Benefit in Hollywood, which raised money for organizations that support mental health in young people. During her speech at the event, Gomez revealed that her involvement with the topic came out of a very difficult personal moment.
"I struggled with my inner world for a long time. I felt lost and hopeless. In 2020 I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. And to be honest, everything changed very quickly. I received the knowledge and answers that I had been desperately seeking for years. Understanding this situation has made me more aware and now I am less afraid than I was," she said.
In 2022, the documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me delved into her battle with mental health, focusing on the struggles and victories she achieved on her path to acceptance and personal growth.
