"Sex and the City" actress dies

Frances Sternhagen, the actress best known for her roles in "Cheers" and "Sex and the City," has died at the age of 93.

The news has been confirmed by the actress's family members.

“It is with great sadness that we share the news that our beloved mother, actress Frances Sternhagen, passed away peacefully of natural causes in New Rochelle, New York on November 27, 2023, at the age of 93. She left behind her 6 children, 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. A celebration of her extraordinary career and life is planned for mid-January, close to her 94th birthday. We continue to be inspired by her love and life", the family's official announcement states.

Sternhagen played the grandmother of Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) on "ER" and as Cliff's (John Ratzenberger) mother on "Cheers," roles that earned her two Emmy nominations. She also played Bunny McDougal, the evil mother of Trey (Kyle McLachlan) and mother-in-law of Charlotte (Kristin Davis), on Sex and the City, for which she received a third Emmy nomination.
