There are no rehabilitation centers! Drug users have increased in Albania

The number of drug users in Albania is growing alarmingly.

Although there are no official statistics, it is thought that there are somewhere between 50-60 thousand users. However, experts already say that these figures have doubled and the largest weight is occupied by the age group from 18-27 years old. What made the situation in Albania even more dramatic is that there are no rehabilitation centers for drug addicts.

A family that has drug users in its circle must pay staggering sums in clinics abroad; which is not accessible to everyone. This is also because of the stigma.

"Real rehabilitation centers, because we are a day center, rehabilitation centers are very few. There are residential day care centers, but they are in limited number if we compare it with the part of the broad mass of individuals who seek help and who are part of this vicious circle that we just mentioned" - Oltion Korreshi, social worker from Aksion Plus.

There are some residential day centers of international organizations that help individuals to give up drugs by treating them with methadone, but such cases resemble 'a drop of water in the middle of an ocean'.

"It must be said that it is insufficient, as the help that Aksion Plus gives beyond our means, because we in Aksion Plus are 7-8 individuals. Only this part helped and treated 250 individuals, which is a daily treatment. Think how much time is left for me as a social worker to contact, help, orient an individual in a given day. That's why I'm saying that it's insufficient" - said Korreshi.

The situation with drug users seems to have reached the SOS point. Drug dealers are increasingly targeting school students to increase their clientele
