Albania with the lowest birth rate in the region

Year after year, Albania is worsening the fertility indicators in relation to Europe, being ranked at the top of the countries with the lowest birth rate.

According to a ranking published by Eurostat for 2021, Albania ranked fourth in Europe after Malta, Spain and Italy with 1.31 children per woman.

The fertility index, which shows the average number of children expected to be born to a woman of reproductive age, has deteriorated rapidly in the last 30 years, decreasing by about 4 times.

According to Eurostat, France has the highest fertility rates in Europe with 1.84 children per woman, followed by the Czech Republic with 1.83 children per woman, Iceland with 1.82 children per woman, Romania with 1.81 children per woman.

On the other hand, Malta, an island country where young people do not prefer to start a family, had the lowest fertility rate in Europe at 1.13 children per woman, Spain with 1.19 children, Italy with 1.25 children per woman and Albania with 1.38 children per woman.

The data show that Albania has the lowest level of fertility in the Region. Even Serbia, which had the lowest birth rates in the region, has not deteriorated. In 2021, the fertility rate in Serbia was 1.52 and remained unchanged compared to the previous year.

Also, Montenegro and North Macedonia were ranked better than Albania (see attached graph).

This means that in the future the population will decrease, but there will be fewer and fewer females, which are the basis of reproduction.

For a population to stop falling, the birth rate must be at least 2.1 children per woman. But in Albania, apart from the decrease in the birth rate, the number of female babies is falling faster./MONITOR
